Falling Leaves, Fallen Lives
48"h x 40"w
2002
NFS
|
Artist Statement:
This
quilt is the second in a series of art pieces honoring the lives lost on
9/11/01.
The brilliant blue of the sky, the crispness of the early autumn
day...New Yorkers awoke on 9/11/01 to one of those rarely perfect days.
The sort of day that makes you want
to
take a personal day off work. Pack up a picnic lunch; spend some time
in the park. With autumn closing in, and a New York winter not far
behind, this day seemed like a gift from Mother Nature. A few did take
the day off. Some to get children settled into a new school. Some just
didn't want to work that day.
Then there were the ones that went to work. Long time employees that
felt an obligation to their positions in the company. The new employees
that wouldn't dare take a day off when they had just started the job
that week. The employees that went to work early so they could take the
afternoon off to spend time with their children.
Each of the nearly 3000 leaves on this quilt represents a life lost on
that day.
Materials and techniques:
Cotton and linen fabrics and fibers on the top, rayon
backing, cotton batting, machine and hand appliquéd, machine quilted.

United in Spirit

|
Artist Statement:
This
quilt was made as a result of the challenge block from IQA. The block
had a variety of images. Some or all of them were to be used in the
quilt. I used all but one. The images of the Statue of Liberty, the
Iwo Jima Memorial, and Mount Rushmore were hand inked with pigma pens,
working off actual photographs. The binding is a braid made from all
the fabrics in the quilt.
Materials and techniques:
100% cotton fabric, cotton batting, machine pieced, hand
inked, machine quilted.
