Facade X
38"h x 24"w
2003
$2000
|
Artist Statement:
I am fascinated with transparency, and what happens
when one sheer fabric is placed over another. The Facade series brings
to mind worn and weathered walls, with the light dancing across the
surface. The hand stitching, with thick thread and a big stitch, calls
to mind primitive designs, and shows the unity of all mankind, past and
present.
Materials and techniques:
Facade X is a sheer collage of delicate
scrim, with silk, screening and metallic fabrics with a backing of sheer
silk organza.

Facade XVII
34"h x 28"w
2004
$2500
|
Artist Statement:
Facade XVII is a variation of my Facade series. There is a container
holding growth and passion against the aged worn look of the facade. It
reflects my inner spirit, and aging body. This piece is extensively
machine stitched, with the stitching creating variety in line, shape and
texture. The edges are left organic, referring to the growth implied in
this piece.
Materials and techniques:
This piece uses scrim, silk, screening, burlap, metallic chiffon, and
other.

Sheer Floral
25"h x 22"w
2004
$1000
|
Artist Statement:
Sheer Floral was inspired by the glorious colors of spring, so welcome
after a dreary winter. It shows the underside of a beautiful blossom,
with the enticing colors facing away from the viewer. The stem holds
prickly surprises, unpleasant ones that will discourage a person from
touching it. There will be consequences if one grabs hold of the stem.
This sense of being attracted and repelled simultaneously seems to
happen repeatedly in relationships. This beautiful flower is an
expression of the desire to be included, but feeling like an outsider.
Materials and techniques:
The flower is of sheer chiffons of silk and polyester, appliquéd on
silk, which is then mounted on a frame. It is entirely machine stitched.

Design 23

Artist Statement:
Design 23 is a simple design based on the unfurling of a seed pod in
nature. It was created by needle felting scrim onto hemp, then
embroidering the design with a thick thread. The needle felted
background created something like a watercolor wash, a perfect backdrop
for the design.
Materials and techniques:
It is framed, without glass.
|
