Susanne Clawson

Email: Susanne Clawson

I began quilting almost by accident in 2005. I took an on-line class, something I had never done before, with Susan Sorrell, who makes creative, wonderful, brightly colored small quilts. I got addicted and have made around 60 very small quilts since then. When I say small, I mean small, around 7" X 7". I get ideas from all kinds of things around me, art in museums, in magazines, looking at things on-line, trees, flowers, animals. Recently, I made my first "real" quilt, all machine sewn. It is based on a design by Freddy Moran, who loves bright colors as I do, and will go on my bed. I am starting to get my small quilts accepted into shows. I was very excited that the 12X12 quilt I made for the SAQA auction was sold. In 2007 I have been accepted into the 25th Annual Small Works Exhibition, Small Works, and the National Small Works Exhibition.

Blue
11-3/4"h X 11"w
2007
$175

Artist Statement: This is my very first "real" quilt, made all by machine. I saw an encaustic painting of intense blues and that was the inspiration for this.

Materials and techniques: Machine sewn and quilted.

Critical Mass
7"h X 7"w
2007
$400

Artist Statement:I wanted to do something all red. I got the idea for the design from a glass artist. After, I thought the vaguely tower shapes reminded me of a nuclear reactor. I thought I calling it Chernobyl, but when I looked that up on-line, I saw that the configuration was totally different. Then the idea of calling it Critical Mass came to mind, since I still wanted it related to the nuclear reactor image I saw.

Materials and techniques: Collage, raw-edge applique, beads, hand stitching.

Green Circles
7-1/2"h X 7-1/4"w
2007
$400

Artist Statement: I was inspired by a painting I saw, all circles.

Materials and techniques: Collage, beads, brass washers, hand stitching.

Triangles
7"h X 7"w
2007
$300

Artist Statement:This was inspired by a picture of a little chest in a catalog.

Materials and techniques: Collage, beads, buttons, hand stitching.

Porcupine
8"h X 7-3/4"w
2005
$500

Artist Statement: Besides miniature quilts, I also make paper sculptures, which are fabulous, spiky, high relief things. I was thinking of way to use some of that imagery in the little quilts, and since I had been doing a series of animals, the porcupine seemed perfect. I used a template to cut out the shapes and sewed them one at a time, all by hand, with the smallest stitches I could manage and the brightest colors I could find. I love it.

Materials and techniques: Collage, raw-edge applique, beads, hand stitching.

Cat Grump
7-1/4"h X 7-1/2"
w
2006
$300

Artist Statement: I have two black cats, which I call the Beasty Boys. One of them inspired this work.

Materials and techniques: Collage, raw-edge applique, beads, hand stitching.
